A BIG THANKS TO PUKEKOHE GOLF CLUB

Just under two weeks ago, we ran the fourth edition of the BaaBaaz Charity Celebrity Golf Day at the Pukekohe Golf Club, and it was an outstanding success.

The course, the new facilities, Tim, Hamish and the team were outstanding. It was a big call for us to move the event to Pukekohe, but we are now very pleased we did.

Hole-by-Hole Guide

The Pukekohe Golf Club course unfolds across rolling countryside, offering a variety of challenges and scenic views throughout the round. Each hole presents its own strategy — from inviting opening drives to carefully protected greens that reward precise approach shots.

This guide offers a glimpse into the character of the course and what golfers can expect as they make their way through all eighteen holes.

HOLE-by-HOLE

The Front Nine

Hole 1

"The Mill"

Straight and forgiving starting Par 5, from an elevated tee in front of the clubhouse. Plenty of room down the middle. A wayward drive to the right, towards the lake, is unlikely to pass the “known or virtually certain” test. Left or front pin placement can be concealed by the raised grass mound, set forward of the double-pitched green. A small pot bunker protects a pin placement at the back right. Short, steep, down-slope behind the green.

Blue Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 15

White Tees -  Par 5 - Stroke 17

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 11

Hole 2

"Adventure"

Long and demanding, with gullies and trees on both sides. Aim for the two conical trees and drive straight and long to the hidden landing area over the low crest that curves away from the centre to the right side. Short of the crest will probably bounce right, down the slope towards the trees; long and left creates an awkward dog-leg to the green. An approach shot that slides right leaves an uncomfortable chip from among the trees. Up-sloping green with a shallow bunker on the left side.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 3

White Tees -  Par 4 - Stroke 3

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 15

Hole 3

"Plateau"

Curved and crested fairway with several risk and reward challenges. Often plays longer than expected, due to the prevailing wind effect on approach shots. Precision tee shot required to the top of the rise on the left side. Very long, narrow, sloping green tucked around trees to the right. Miss the green on the left side and face a very difficult “up and down.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 7

White Tees -  Par 4 - Stroke 5

Yellow Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 3

Hole 4

"David"

Over the lake, to a deceptive two-level green, protected by two bunkers on the left. Steep mounds and long-cut rough make chipping tricky from back and right. Local knowledge is useful for reading the “borrow” on this green.

Blue Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 17

White Tees -  Par 3 - Stroke 15

Yellow Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 17

Hole 5

"Goliath"

Long and straight, downhill off the tee. Strategically placed trees on the left side, and the prevailing crosswind, entice tee and fairway shots towards the out-of-bounds running the full length on the right. Beware of the grove of trees short of the green on the right. Drive to center-right and second shot to center-left gives the best line to the unusual two-sided green with a longitudinal ridge. Down-slope and out-of-bounds back left of the green, to catch an over-hit approach.

Blue Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 9

White Tees -  Par 5 - Stroke 9

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 1

Hole 6

"The Drive"

The hole with a piece of everything! Into the prevailing westerly wind, from any of the three elevated teeing grounds, and over the large lake that ends near a bunker tucked into the left of the crescent-shaped green. The narrow “bail-out” fairway is protected by long-cut rough and the out-of-bounds fence running along the right side and behind the green. The direct line to the “classic” pin placement, at back-left and behind the bunker, requires total distance “carry”.

Blue Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 5

White Tees -  Par 3 - Stroke 7

Yellow Tees - Par 3  - Stroke 13

Hole 7

"Waterloo"

Dogleg right. A grove of tall trees will hide the green if your tee shot is to the right. The tee shot needs to be up the rise, to the center-left of the plateau, leaving a short to mid-iron approach to a large flat green, protected by raised left and right front bunkers.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 13

White Tees -  Par 4 - Stroke 13

Yellow Tees - Par 4  - Stroke 7

Hole 8

"Hillside"

Several challenges give this hole a deserved low stroke rating. An accurate tee shot is required to line up the gap between tall trees, in order to reach a long and elevated two-tier green. A small mound on the left protects the top tier; miss the green short left for a challenging chip, particularly if the pin is on the lower tier. Alternatively, miss on the right and face a shallow greenside bunker or, wider on the right, a concealed hazard lake.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 1

White Tees -  Par 4 - Stroke 1

Yellow Tees - Par 4  - Stroke 9

Hole 9

"Deception"

Slight dogleg left over a low crest. The only hole with out of bounds on the left side, also behind the green, below the clubhouse. The tee shot will tend to slide right, towards trees. Front bunkers, left and right, protect a wide, oval-shaped green with some deceptive “borrow."

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 11

White Tees -  Par 4 - Stroke 11

Yellow Tees - Par 4  - Stroke 5

Pukekohe_Golf_Course_layout.jpg

The Back Nine

Hole 10

"Newhope"

Long and straight, into the prevailing wind; two great shots (women three) are required to reach this green. From the joined tee-block in front of the clubhouse, the large tree dominating the left side and the ground contour tend to slide tee shots to the right. Semi-blind second shot (ladies third) to a long and narrow green, with mounds along both sides and a subtle “borrow” to the right. Arguably the most satisfying par hole on the course.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 2

White Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 2

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 16

Hole 11

"Slippery"

Shallow, wide and undulating green, set diagonally to, and slightly below the tee. Deep bunkers at the left end and right front with twin grassed hollows at the back. Subtle tee and pin placements on this hole can create deceptive playing distances.

Blue Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 14

White Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 16

Yellow Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 18

Hole 12

"Lookout"

Slightly “S”-shaped fairway, with gully and trees on both sides. From the elevated tee, fade the drive to center-right for the best angle of approach to a long, diagonally set “horizon” green, protected by a small raised bunker at mid-left. Miss the green on the right side, or over the back, for a testing uphill recovery.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 4

White Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 4

Yellow Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 4

Hole 13

"Narrow Neck"

Downhill, from a large teeing ground; choices are to go straight, over the lake on the left side of the fairway at drive length, or to angle slightly right, towards and short of the large fairway bunker a little further on. The further right, the longer the deceptive flat approach into the prevailing wind. Out of bounds on the right, also surrounding the up-sloping green, with a large shallow bunker along the left side.

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 6

White Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 6

Yellow Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 2

Hole 14

"Becher's"

Long and flat, with an intimidating tee shot through a gap, from a loop of the creek, over another loop, which is part of the out of bounds, also running down the right side. Miss on the right, for a character-building pitch over a shallow bunker, towards the lake tucked close to the left side of the up-sloping green.

Blue Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 10

White Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 12

Yellow Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 10

Hole 15

"Upshot"

Almost straight, with trees and out of bounds all the way on the right. Drive to the top of the rise, or face a semi-blind second shot. An approach shot hit left or over-long is likely to be in big trouble, with a gully and trees close to the back left of a deceptively long green, set on a diagonal and protected by a small bunker at front-right and a larger and deeper bunker at mid-left. Big and true green with subtle “borrow.”

Blue Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 12

White Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 8

Yellow Tees - Par 4 - Stroke 12

Hole 16

"Hilltop"

Uphill, over a diagonal gully, through a gap between tall trees. Very long, rising, two-level green forming a narrow “figure 8” shape, with bunkers on each side, and mounds encircling the back. Tee shot to the right, if not out of bounds, gives a difficult, blind uphill pitch. Front pin placement can be a severe test of short-game skill. A hole where correct club selection and a straight tee shot are rewarded.

Blue Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 8

White Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 10

Yellow Tees - Par 3 - Stroke 14

Hole 17

"Temptation"

A tempting par four that invites an aggressive tee shot, but accuracy is essential to avoid trouble and set up the best approach into the green. Players must decide whether to play safely or take on the challenge, making this a pivotal hole late in the round where smart course management can make all the difference.

Blue Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 18

White Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 18

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 6

Hole 18

"Au Revoir"

A memorable finishing hole that brings golfers back towards the clubhouse, demanding a strong drive and well-judged approach to reach the green in regulation. With the round nearing its end, this hole offers one final opportunity to finish strongly before relaxing on the clubhouse deck.

Blue Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 16

White Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 14

Yellow Tees - Par 5 - Stroke 8

OUT OF BOUNDS (Rule 18.2)
Out of bounds (defined by white stakes, white lines and fences) includes:

  • Course boundary – the road frontage (defined by white stakes) and boundary lines defined by fences.

  • The netting fence to the left of the 13th hole, including the rock garden at the base of the fence and its wood surround.

  • Garden area to the left of the 9th green.

  • Greenkeepers House to the left of the 18th Fairway.

BALL LOST OR OUT OF BOUNDS - Alternate to Stroke & Distance (MLR E5)
For all forms of play except Club Championship Events and Pennants, if a player’s ball has not been
found or is known or virtually certain to be out of bounds, and a provisional ball has not been played, the player may proceed as follows:

  • For 2 penalty strokes, drop the original or another ball in a relief area which stretches up to 2 club-lengths onto the fairway, no closer to the hole from where the ball lies/crossed out of bounds.

PENALTY AREAS
Penalty Areas are defined by Red stakes and/or lines. The stake is an immovable obstruction which
cannot be moved unless the ball lies outside the penalty area.

A Drop Zone is in play as an additional relief option for a ball in the lake on Hole 4. The Drop Zone is
either of the two tee blocks to the front of the Yellow tee block. Select the zone closest to where the
ball lies in the lake. The ball must be dropped (not teed) in and stay in the Dropping Zone:

PREFERRED LIES (Rule 14.2) - also known as Clean & Place
Check the scorecard to see if and where this rule is in play. The player may take free relief by placing a ball
once within 15cm of the spot where the original ball lay, not nearer the hole.

NO PLAY ZONES (Rules 16 & 17) – relief must be taken. Defined by sign and/or stakes/lines.

  • Where a No Play Zone is defined by Red Stakes/lines (Penalty area), for one penalty stroke, the reference point for taking relief is the point where the ball crossed into the penalty area. R17.1d.

  • Where a No Play Zone is defined by White Stakes/lines (Abnormal Course Condition), find the nearest point of complete relief no closer to the hole than where the ball lies in the area. Relief is free. R16.1b.

ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS (Rule 16) – Areas defined by a painted line, white stakes, GUR sign or as specified on the notice board.

  • Tractor/Vehicle ruts in the General Area (not wheel marks made by a cart)

  • Area of Green Keepers shed is defined by a white line/stakes. Green Keepers leavings/maintenance items piled in the area between the 13th tee and to left of 15th fairway – relief must be taken

  • Formed Gardens other than those specified as Out of Bounds or Penalty Area.

  • Scoria-filled drains

  • Young Trees (excluding hedgerows, bushes, and tree stumps) that are less than 2 club-lengths in height. If a tree interferes with a player’s stance or area of intended swing, the player must take free relief.

  • Bunker - where a GUR sign/white stake is present. The reference point to take free relief is the nearest point outside the bunker no nearer the hole from where the ball lies in the bunker.

SUSPENSION OF PLAY
Suspension of play for a dangerous situation will be by a prolonged blast of the siren. Play must stop immediately. For other suspension of play, the siren will sound 3 short blasts.
